Active Shooter

We are proud to serve the Washtenaw Community College population. If you need to report a medical emergency, a crime, or accident, please call 734-973-3411 from any campus phone.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, an Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims. Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes, before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation.

Active Threat Training

The Public Safety Office routinely provides ALICE threat training for the campus community. ALICE is the leading training solution that increases an organization’s and individual’s odds of survival during a violent intruder event. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate.

The Department of Homeland Security in conjunction with the Houston Police Department has developed a training video which is available to the general public.

In addition, the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s office has been providing A.L.I.C.E. (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) training countywide for the last three years to include two training sessions which were held at WCC in 2013. View highlights of the presentation.
