WTMC has a strict anti-bullying policy, which applies to all activities on WTMC/WCC campus and to all WTMC/WCC sponsored activities whether on or off school property.
Bullying or other aggressive behavior toward a student, whether by other students, staff, or third parties, including (but not limited to) board members, parents, guests, contractors, vendors, and volunteers is strictly prohibited. This prohibition includes physical, verbal, and psychological abuse, including hazing, gestures, comments, threats, or actions to a student, which can cause or threaten to cause bodily harm, reasonable fear for personal safety, or personal degradation. Demonstration of appropriate behavior, treating others with civility and respect, and refusing to tolerate harassment or bullying is expected of administrators, staff, and volunteers to provide positive examples for student behavior.
Read the complete anti-bullying policy.
Attendance in WCC classes (for WTMC, see below)
All students taking WCC classes must prove their attendance in the correct class within the first week of each new semester by obtaining the signature of their college instructors. These slips are checked against the student's schedule in the office to determine that the student is in the correct classes and carrying enough credits to be considered a full-time student.
Students who fail or refuse to provide adequate evidence of their attendance for the student audit can be dropped from the program or charged for classes that are not covered by state funds due to the lack of evidence of attendance.
Attendance in WTMC classes (for WCC classes, see above)
There are no excused absences at Washtenaw Technical Middle College. Attendance is evaluated as part of the student's soft skills. Nevertheless, in certain circumstances, we do document the reason the student did not attend. A documented absence is not excused. Our goal is to help students learn to manage attendance like adults do in college and the workplace.
If a student receives 8 absences or more in fall or winter semesters in any single class, the student may lose his or her soft skill credential. Please note that this is only 8 days of missed school .
Students who have received books for WCC classes must return them books before they can receive new books for the next semester. Book return dates at the end of each semester are publicized in the events calendar on the web page. Students who fail to return books from the previous semester during the book return period will need to pay for them before getting books for the new semester.
WCC provides public safety services on campus 24 hours a day. Emergency phones on campus connect directly to the public safety office, and may be used by anyone on campus. Any person violating campus rules and regulations may be detained by campus safety. Violations of law will be reported to local police agencies and can result in prosecution. See WCC’s Public Safety section.
Certification for transition to WCC
Students must meet 3 requirements before moving from a WTMC course to an entry-level WCC course:
- Academic performance as measured by the student's content teacher
- Soft skill performance as assessed by all of the student's WTMC instructors
- Qualifying ACCUPLACER and ALEKS scores
If any one of these 3 conditions is missing, the student may not transition to college-level courses.
WTMC uses the WCC Alert system to report school closing for inclement weather or any other reason. Students and parents should be sure to sign up for this system. If WCC is reported as closed or having a late start, then WTMC will be closed or starting late. On rare occasions, WTMC may cancel classes or close early. In such cases the closing will be reported by WCC Alert, on various local media outlets, and our website.
Clubs and other organizations at WCC
WCC student clubs and organizations are open to WTMC students, including athletics with WCC club sports.
Educational Development Plan (EDP)
The Educational Development Plan describes the student's educational goal and records progress towards that goal. The EDP shows the order in which the student plans to take the classes required to complete a college program. An EDP is particularly important in a college environment since each course is not taught during each semester.
Students must plan at least a year in advance and must regularly update the EDP with their BASE advisor. The scheduling process can only take place if students have a current and updated EDP prepared before meeting with their BASE advisor.
Medical emergencies will be referred to a campus emergency medical team. In most cases the student will be transported to the nearest hospital. The school cannot approve medical services for your son/daughter.
Every effort will be made to contact parents or guardians in the event of an emergency. Parents are responsible for providing up-to-date emergency contact information for their student.
Normally student records are under the control of the student's parents/guardians until the student reaches age 18. A clause in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) passes this control to the student if they are taking post-secondary classes. All WTMC students will be taking postsecondary classes. In order for the school to receive grades and other materials from WCC, we must have permission under FERPA from the student authorizing WCC to release the information. This permission also allows WTMC instructors and administrators to communicate information regarding the student to school personnel.
Transition to college coursework is dependent upon the demonstration of both academic and soft skills. Coursework alone (getting an A in a WTMC class) does not automatically certify transition to a WCC class.
Each student on campus must have a college-issued student identification (ID) card. Student identification cards can be obtained from campus safety. Replacement of lost ID cards costs $10.00.
Illegal or controlled drugs or substances
Students in possession of, using or dealing in illegal drugs or controlled substances will be immediately suspended. A recommendation for their expulsion will be put before the Board of Directors. Additionally, any information regarding the situation, or evidence obtained as a result of an investigation, will be turned over to campus public safety or a police agency for possible prosecution.
WCC is a non-smoking campus. State school law does not allow public high school students to possess tobacco products or use tobacco products in their school building or on school property, and the entire campus of WCC are considered school property for WTMC students.
All WCC buildings and grounds are a non-smoking area, by WCC board policy .
Students must receive soft skill credentials from all of their WTMC instructors in
order to transition to WCC classes. Students failing to demonstrate adequate soft
skills in college classes, which results in a failing grade, may be returned to WTMC
classes. More about soft skills.
Any student may participate in student council. The council sets up its own rules of operation and plans student activities for the year. Any student wishing to be a member of the council should watch for notices indicating meeting time and location.
Suspension, as opposed to expulsion, is a short-term removal from school. Suspended students cannot be on campus during their suspension. Suspensions can range from 1 to 10 days depending upon the severity of the act that caused the suspension. Suspension days count toward a student's absent days total.
WTMC defines tardiness as being less than 10 minutes late to class. If more than 10 minutes late, the student will be marked absent. After 4 tardies in a class, each additional tardy will be marked as an absence.
Students submit an official copy of their high school transcript to prove their eligibility to enroll in WTMC.
High school courses from a student's previous high school will not be posted to WTMC's transcript. If a student applies to another educational institution or program that requires a high school transcript, they are advised to request an official transcript from the original high school.
The WTMC transcript includes both Middle College and WCC courses. These are the courses that will determine if the student qualifies for graduation from WTMC.
If the completion of college credits is an issue with the next educational institution, the student is advised to request an official WCC transcript, which reflects only college courses.
Current students are welcome to have guests visit the school under the following guidelines:
- Guest must be of high school age.
- Guest must be able to show that their school is not in attendance on the day of the visit, or that they have the permission of their principal.
- 9th-grade visits are only permitted during winter and spring semesters.
- Visits are not allowed on Fridays, finals week, or during special activities.
The host student must:
- Make arrangements for a visit 48 hours in advance of the visit.
- Be responsible for the actions of the guest.
Use or possession of a weapon or an object that is intended for use as a weapon is not allowed. Students who violate the weapons rule will be immediately expelled. Minimum expulsion time is 1 full school year (180 days). Mitigating circumstances or requests for a return to school must be referred to the Board of Directors.
