You are a vital part of our community!
What do we mean when we say diversity?
Society, both locally and nationally, is comprised of many individuals, each having unique attributes based on a variety of social, physical, mental and cultural characteristics. Diversity encompasses many dimensions, including, but not limited to:
- Race
- Culture
- Nationality
- Ethnicity
- Religion
- Ideas
- Family structure
- Beliefs
- Geographic origin
- Class
- Sexual orientation
- Gender
- Gender identity and expression
- Disability and age
How do you benefit from diversity?
Individual differences can be building blocks for learning and growth from each other. A diverse population is also an important educational resource: it enhances educational experiences which in turn enhance the environment for learning. Socializing with people who are different than us contributes to our academic development, satisfaction with the college education, level of cultural awareness and commitment to promoting diverse understandings.
What can you expect from our office?
Because we are committed to civility, mutual respect, social justice, and the free and open exchange of ideas, the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion works to:
- Assist WCC in being a welcoming campus
- Eliminate discrimination in any form at WCC
- Engage WCC students, faculty, and staff in events, activities and initiatives that will provide growth in their understanding of diversity and its benefits and issues, and will help support and celebrate WCC’s diverse community
- Increase knowledge of and interaction among the many types of diverse populations at WCC (intersectionality)
- Offer assistance and support if you experience bullying, harassment or any other form of discrimination on the WCC campus
- Provide education, training, events and activities that support and celebrate diversity at WCC, such as the Diversity Extravaganza, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, and LGBTQA+ Pride Day.
Diversity courses
Expand your worldview! You can choose courses in many WCC departments that offer a new understanding of cultural differences. In addition, Eastern Michigan University counts most of these courses towards its Diverse World requirement. View diversity courses.
Events
We look for ways to promote and appreciate the diversity of our students, faculty, staff and visitors at WCC. If you have an idea for an event or activity, please contact us!
