Washtenaw Community College celebrated the accomplishments of 144 graduates of the Adult Transitions GED Plus Program on Thursday, Oct. 23.

The program, which has been offered at WCC for the past 15 years, helps students build a strong foundation to launch them from GED to college to career, offering counseling services, individual tutoring, student mentors, job readiness training and college transition support.

“The Adult Transitions program is not just about earning a GED,” said Bonnie Truhn, adult transitions manager at WCC. “It’s about helping students use their GED credential as the jumping off point to college and careers and ensuring that they leave our program with skills, knowledge and a network of resources that prepare and support them through their next best steps.”

State Representative Adam Zemke served as the keynote speaker.

Zemke, along with WCC Director of Government Relations Jason Morgan and Truhn were integral in bringing about legislation to appropriate funds for GED students enrolled in college and career readiness programs like the one offered at WCC. Funds to pay for testing should become available by next summer.

“This is a huge step to ensure that cost barriers will not prevent people from furthering their personal and professional goals,” Truhn added.

Orientation for the next round of GED testing at WCC starts in December. Interested individuals can call 734-677-5006 or visit wccnet.edu/ged for more information.
